Competition resources
To help you introduce and run the SunSmart competition in class we have developed this handy set of downloadable resources.
The key things you must use to enter the competition are:
- the factsheet
- the pledge sheet
- the entry form
The other resources can be used to support running the competition in class.

Download and print out a pledge sheet for each pupil in your class taking part in the competition.
The sheets can be slotted into exercise books to keep them safe and handy for when your pupils want to tick off their SunSmart pledge/s each day.
We’ve provided an example pledge sheet and a blank template that can be customised depending on which pledges you decide to take.
We appreciate that each school has their own rules and circumstances regarding sun protection policies. For example, perhaps some of your pupils' families can't afford to supply them with their own sunscreen or you don't allow sunglasses to be worn in school grounds. With this in mind, the pledging activity is designed to be flexible and we want schools to select the SunSmart actions that are appropriate for them. This is why the downloadable pledge sheet is a blank template, allowing you and your pupils to write in pledges that 'fit' your school.
An A4 entry form and questionnaire that must be completed and submitted alongside competition entries.
Print out and stick this on the classroom wall to remind pupils to carry out their SunSmart pledges.
Sheets containing stickers featuring 'Cool the Monkey' were mailed out to primary schools in March 2010. They are a great way to reward your pupils for being SunSmart, but are not a fundamental part of the competition activity. Unfortunately, due to unprecedented demand we have now run out of sticker sheets. However, if you would like to create your own please feel free to use the attached pdf.
As the entry form shows, we are asking all schools to send us a copy of their sun protection policy in with their entries, if they have one. We will not use submitted policies to judge the competition but to inform the way that SunSmart works with schools in the future.
Developing a sun protection policy is one of the most effective measures to ensure that sun safety activities are created and implemented within the whole school environment. SunSmart strongly advises that all schools develop their own policy and are interested to hear from schools who are facing challenges in doing this – email sunsmart@cancer.org.uk
A few ideas for building on the pledging activity with your class:
- Why not take a photo of the pupils holding up their challenge cards and make a display in the classroom? This will encourage them to do their challenge during the week.
- Why not adapt the suggested challenges to make them personal to your school? For example the shade challenge could refer to playing under a specific tree in the playground or you could promise to wear a hat for a particular event that week – such as an outdoor lesson/school trip/sports day.
- Encourage pupils to show their cards to their parents – they can then support them and this should raise awareness in school.
- During the summer holidays your pupils will still be at risk of getting sunburnt as will their families. Maybe they will be going to the park with their friends or taking a foreign holiday with their parents. As a class you could revisit the importance of avoiding sunburn before you break up for the holidays. Get pupils to talk about what they will be doing and think about what actions they will take to be SunSmart and how they will encourage their families to be SunSmart.
We’d love to hear from you if you come up with any other ideas on how to build on the competition – email sunsmart@cancer.org.uk
