SunSmart campaign overview

Know your own risk of skin cancerWhat is the SunSmart Campaign?

SunSmart is the UK's national skin cancer prevention campaign.

We provide evidence-based information about skin cancer and sun protection.

SunSmart is commissioned by the UK Health Departments and run by Cancer Research UK. We have a small SunSmart team based at our head office in London. This team works with many other groups to deliver accurate information across the country.

What do we do?

SunSmart was launched in 2003 and is now in its eighth year.

2010 campaign activities include:

  • Running our award winning online social networking campaign Skindividual. This campaign is now in its second year and seeks to engage young people with campaign messages through music.
  • Working in partnership with the online retailer ASOS and Bauer Publishing. The partnership aims to communicate the importance of preventing sunburn and enjoying the sun safely to a young audience
  • Taking an experiential roadshow showing young people the damage UV overexposure has done to their skin to beach, city and festival locations
  • Running a school’s competition to promote awareness of the safe enjoyment of the sun amongst primary school children in England and Scotland aged between five and 12.
  • Giving briefings to journalists to raise awareness of key skin cancer issues in the media.
  • Forming a partnership with Superdrug (link to our webpage about the partnership) to promote skin cancer awareness to staff and customers.
  • Supplying printed resources and online assets such as the sunburn animation and melanoma case study videos for professionals to use in health and educational settings.
  • Working together with local Cancer Networks and Local Authorities to promote a unified approach to skin cancer awareness and sun protection.
  • Developing a Skin Cancer Advisory Board to act as a steering group for key decisions on strategy and messaging related to the prevention and early detection of skin cancer.
  • Providing statistics and information about skin cancer prevention for the public and professionals through our website.
