SunSmart campaign overview
What is the SunSmart Campaign?
SunSmart is the UK's national skin cancer prevention campaign.
We provide evidence-based information about skin cancer and sun protection.
SunSmart is commissioned by the UK Health Departments and run by Cancer Research UK. We have a small SunSmart team based at our head office in London. This team works with many other groups to deliver accurate information across the country.

SunSmart was launched in 2003 and is about to commence it's eighth year.
In 2009, our activities included:
- Communicating the importance of sun protection to teenagers and young adults
- Creating and evaluating new interventions aimed at young people, using social networking sites
- Campaigning to raise awareness of the dangers of sunbeds
- Working together with local Cancer Networks and Local Authorities to promote a unified approach to skin cancer awareness and sun protection
- Providing information about skin cancer prevention for the public and professionals through our website
- Giving briefings to journalists to raise awareness of key skin cancer issues in the media
- Helping schools to develop their own sun protection policies using our SunSmart school policy guidelines
- Supplying printed resources for professionals to use in local health promotion activities
This website contains easy to understand information about skin cancer and how to stay safe in the sun.
If you are a teacher or a parent you will find useful information about school policies in the schools section.
