Skin Cancer Prevention Campaign - SunSmart Overview

Know your own risk of skin cancerWhat is the SunSmart Campaign?

SunSmart is the UK's national skin cancer prevention campaign.

We provide evidence-based information about skin cancer and sun protection.

SunSmart is commissioned by the UK Health Departments and run by Cancer Research UK. We have a small SunSmart team based at our head office in London. This team works with many other groups to deliver accurate information across the country.

What do we do?

SunSmart was launched in 2003 and has recently completed it's ninth campaign.

A brief summary of some of the main 2011 activity is outlined below:

  • Developed a partnership with T4 and Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts for an integrated media campaign to encourage young people to ‘Feel the summer, not the burn'. Nicola filmed her top tips for being SunSmart which were promoted digitally and shown at ‘ T4 on the Beach'  in Weston Super-Mare on July 10th, where we also distributed hats and sunscreen. The campaign was supported by advertorials in ‘Look’, ‘Closer’, ‘Heat’ ‘Pick me up’ and ‘Love It’ magazines.
  • A ‘Sun Protection Pack’ was developed to help primary schools develop a bespoke sun protection policy and to promote the safe enjoyment of the sun amongst pupils. Check out the 'Resources for Primary Schools' on our Schools page to download the contents of the Pack.
  • Created a set of new sunbed resources, with improved artwork and reference to the law change prohibiting sunbed use amongst under 18s
  • An online campaign about the dangers of sunbed use targeted sunbed users. Videos from ‘Leathaface’ – a wannabe rapper who makes his own hip-hop videos and tries to get respect with an over-the-top sunbed tan – were posted onto YouTube and Facebook and seeded on other relevant youth-focused websites.
  • Comprehensive distribution of SunSmart resources to relevant environments, including travel hubs and tourist spots throughout the UK
